Field Trips at the Alaska Aviation Museum

For the 2015-16 school year, the Alaska Aviation Museum is offering free field trips and science festivals.

Field trips must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance and can accommodate between 10-150 students at a time.

Field Trips:

· Guided Experiences: All Guided Experiences are 45 minutes and can accommodate up to 35 students. Can’t come to the museum? Let us bring the museum to you! Science of Flight and Navigating with the Nunamiut are also available as outreach programs.

· Science of Flight- Students experiment with different shapes to create a successful aircraft. Class covers scientific method, engineering design, four forces of flight, and axis of flight.

Meets Common Core Anchor Standards

· Speaking and Listening: 1, 2, 3, 4

· Language: 1

· Navigating with the Nunamiut- Students play a game on a giant map, trying to make it through a year, “traveling” around Alaska as the Nunamiut did before settling in Anaktuvuk Pass, illustrating how flight changed life on the ground for Alaskans.

Meets Common Core Anchor Standards

· Reading: 1, 5, 6, 7

· Writing: 1

· Speaking and Listening: 1, 2, 3, 4

· Language: 1, 4, 6

· Artifact Lab- Explore historic aircraft, design their own amphibious aircraft, and learn about biomimicry.

·Docent-led Tour: Docent tours of the museum are 45 minutes, cover the history of Alaska through aircraft, include interactive elements, and are appropriate for all grade levels.

Self-guided museum exploration: Students and teachers or chaperones can discover the museum together. Feel free to bring your own materials—scavenger hunt, journals and pencils for sketching and note-taking, or your own assignment.

Science Festivals: Science Festivals consist of aviation-themed table-top hands-on exhibits available for evening programs, or to bring in during the school day.
